Music for Lent, Mount Dinham Exeter

Love is strong as death …. our concert of ‘a cappella’ choral music for Lent ranges across five centuries, painting the sorrowful dark and ecstatic light of approaching Easter.  At the heart of the concert are Francis Poulenc’s intense “Four Penitential Motets”, combining anguish with rapture, with striking music composed in the dark months preceding the outbreak of the Second World War.

Though separated by centuries, the music of Englishman Robert White and Estonian Arvo Pärt, shares a sense of purity and devotion.  Two of Purcell’s best-known anthems yearn for forgiveness, whilst William Walton makes a more dramatic plea for the power of love.

Anton Bruckner’s powerful, romantic motets express both awe and humility; the music of his contemporary and countryman Heinrich von Herzogenberg is equally heartfelt and intense.  Join us for an evening of high contrast and deep emotion.
