History

In 1985 Antony leFleming formed a chamber orchestra in Exeter called the South West Mozart Players. His wife, Naomi Butterworth played cello and Brenda Willoughby was first violin. In 1989 he formed the South West Mozart Singers enabling the organization to expand their repertoire of Mozart. Other repertoire was included and the first concert included Mozart Vespers K339 and Kodaly Missa Brevis. The choir was a small group of singers who came to rehearsals note-perfect enabling the performance to take place after approximately four rehearsals. They enjoyed a couple of memorable tours to Spain in the early 1990s..

The group changed its name to English Mozart Players and Singers  in 1993 and in 1994 a larger choir performed Mozart’s Mass in C Minor in Exeter Cathedral. Through the 1990s there were performances throughout Devon with an increasingly wide repertoire including some of Antony leFleming’s own compositions. When Antony moved to London in 1997 the choir decided that it would like to continue as a group and adopted the name Exeter Chamber Choir. Graham Treacher took over the baton followed by John Railton and then Simon Honeyball. By the turn of the century, choir numbers were dwindling and it was decided to audition for a new musical director and Andrew Daldorph was one of those invited. In 2002 he became the musical director and has continued to improve and develop the choir ever since.
